As artificial intelligence continues its relentless march toward rendering the internet indistinguishable from a bot farm, OpenAI has quietly assembled a skeleton crew—fewer than ten people—to build what amounts to a radical solution: a social network that verifies you’re actually human before letting you post.

The mechanism is deceptively straightforward: iris-scanning technology from World, the biometric verification platform chaired by Sam Altman through his Tools for Humanity entity, would serve as the gatekeeper. Unlike the email addresses and phone numbers that platforms from Facebook to LinkedIn have relied upon for decades—credentials as easily duplicated as they are worthless—an iris scan theoretically guarantees one account per actual person.

Apple Face ID remains on the table as a fallback, though the World project’s Orb devices represent the more ambitious path forward. The platform’s core objective centers on reducing bot activity to ensure a space for genuine user interaction.

The timing hardly seems coincidental. X has hemorrhaged credibility alongside hundreds of thousands of bot accounts; the platform purged 1.7 million such accounts in 2025 alone. Altman himself spent years griping about this proliferation, eventually concluding that Twitter and Reddit had devolved into exercises in AI-generated falsity.

The market certainly noticed. Worldcoin’s WLD token surged 40% following integration announcements, though subsequent adjustments tempered the euphoria. That volatility speaks volumes about investor appetite for solutions to the authenticity crisis, even if the underlying technology remains novel.

Yet biometric verification introduces its own complications. Iris data, once compromised, cannot be reset like a password. Privacy advocates have rightly flagged the dystopian implications of immutable biological identifiers stored in corporate databases, particularly given the expanding surveillance apparatus most users accept without fanfare. These concerns mirror broader issues with digital signatures in cryptocurrency systems, where authentication methods must balance security with user privacy.

Altman’s vision represents either a necessary recalibration of how we verify identity online or a troubling precedent for normalized biometric gatekeeping.

Whether OpenAI’s social network succeeds likely depends less on technical sophistication than on whether users will sacrifice privacy for the promise of authentic discourse. History suggests they will.
