not for everyday individual

In the wreckage of the 2008 financial crisis, when trust in traditional institutions had evaporated as thoroughly as the subprime mortgage market, Bitcoin emerged with an audacious promise: a peer-to-peer transaction system that would eliminate the need for banks, central authorities, and the intermediaries who had just nearly collapsed the global economy. Yet the architecture designed to accomplish this revolutionary objective contains a fundamental contradiction: it was never optimized for actual human use.

Bitcoin promised to eliminate intermediaries, yet its architecture was never optimized for actual human use.

The technical realities reveal this disconnect immediately. Transaction validation requires approximately ten minutes, median fees have climbed to twenty dollars, and the irreversible nature of transfers makes cryptocurrency unsuitable for everyday commerce where consumer protections matter. These aren’t incidental inefficiencies—they’re structural features. Engineers prioritized cryptographic soundness and decentralization mechanics over user experience, effectively building a system for machines rather than people. Long-term Bitcoin holders have historically maintained conviction in the underlying monetary principles despite these practical limitations, viewing the asset through a multi-decade macro lens rather than evaluating immediate usability constraints.

The volatility compounds this unsuitability for functional currency. Without intrinsic backing or fundamental value anchors, cryptocurrency prices fluctuate dramatically, rendering the asset unreliable as a medium of exchange. Purchasing power becomes indeterminate between transactions. This characteristic transforms cryptocurrency into something entirely different from what its creators envisioned: a speculative instrument rather than a payment alternative. The environmental footprint from mining has generated mounting criticism among both technologists and policymakers concerned about sustainability.

Contemporary market reality underscores how thoroughly the original vision has inverted. Most cryptocurrency trading now occurs through centralized platforms like BlackRock-managed ETFs on NASDAQ—precisely the institutional intermediaries the system purportedly circumvented. El Salvador’s celebrated Bitcoin adoption collapsed into irrelevance, with minimal actual transaction activity. Greater fool theory, not ideological commitment, drives investor behavior. People purchase cryptocurrency expecting to sell later at higher prices, not because they believe in decentralized finance.

The failed objectives accumulate. Cryptocurrency cannot handle payments at scale without centralization. It offers less security and more fraud vulnerability than conventional banking despite marketing claims. The pseudo-anonymous design attracts illicit activity while failing to deliver true privacy. Bitcoin’s security model depends on SHA-256 collision resistance, a cryptographic property so computationally demanding to break that it would require more energy than the observable universe can provide.

What remains is a technology that excels precisely where humans don’t: in speed-of-light calculations, automated transfers between systems, and the elimination of human friction. Perhaps cryptocurrency was always destined for machine adoption rather than consumer adoption—a system awaiting an era when AI entities conduct digital transactions with one another, requiring neither the trust mechanisms humans depend upon nor the user-friendly interfaces humans demand. The brutal UX wasn’t an oversight. It was a preview of intended users.
